A Day in Blue Diamond
A Perfect Family Day in Blue Diamond: Exploring The Old West, Unique Shopping and Nature
Just a short drive from the neon lights of Las Vegas, Blue Diamond offers a serene retreat perfect for families looking to connect with nature, enjoy unique shopping experiences, and explore the beauty of the Mojave Desert. Blue Diamond, with a population of approximately 330 people, is a quintessential small town. Despite its proximity to the city of Las Vegas, Blue Diamond maintains a distinct, slow-paced charm that makes it feel worlds apart. The town’s tight-knit community is one of its most defining features, and its residents take pride in the simplicity and tranquility of their daily lives. Here's how to spend an unforgettable day in this village with your family.
Start with Breakfast & Explore the Village
Kick off your day at Cottonwood Station Eatery, a local favorite that offers a relaxed atmosphere and a menu filled with breakfast options. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic breakfast sandwich, a pastry, or something more substantial, this cozy café has something for everyone. The outdoor seating area is ideal for families with kids, offering plenty of space for them to move around while you enjoy your morning coffee.
While you are here, explore the town and snap some photos that will take you back to the feeling of the Old West. Village market is a mercantile, gas station and Sheriff's office all in one. The general store was built in 1942 and it’s original customers were miners at the Blue Diamond Mine. The town also has a park, library, elementary school, event hall, and a church.
Enjoy a Scenic Hike & Have a Picnic
Once you’re fueled up, head over to Spring Mountain Ranch State Park for a morning hike. The park is home to several trails that are suitable for families, including the easy and scenic Ash Grove Trail. This short loop trail winds through a beautiful grove of ash trees and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The wide, flat path is perfect for little ones, and you might even spot some wildlife along the way. The ranch’s spacious lawns are perfect for spreading out a blanket and enjoying a picnic or snack surrounded by nature. If you didn’t pack a picnic, you can grab some snacks and drinks from The Village Market before heading over. After lunch, take a stroll around the ranch, where you can explore historic buildings, visit the ranch house, or let the kids play in the open spaces.
Super Summer Theater runs May - September at Spring Mountain Ranch. Entrance: $10-15 per vehicle. Address: 6375 Hwy. 159, Blue Diamond, NV 89004.
Pull off to the side of the road near the old Bonnie Springs Ranch for family photos. The entire Bonnie Springs area is nestled within the landscape of Red Rock Canyon, and the dramatic cliffs provide a breathtaking backdrop.
Discover Unique Shopping at a Desert Nursery
After your hike, it’s time to explore a Blue Diamond unique, location and a must-visit - Cactus Joe’s Blue Diamond Nursery. It’s a quirky and enchanting find that doubles as a desert botanical garden. Cactus Joe’s is a wonderland of desert plants, sculptures, and one-of-a-kind art pieces. The kids will love wandering through the various sections, discovering everything from towering cacti to colorful rocks and minerals. It’s a perfect spot to pick up a unique souvenir or just enjoy the eclectic atmosphere. There is even a gift shop within the nursery that offers artisan jewelry, indoor plants, rocks, gems, minerals, Navajo-carved horsehair pottery, and apparel. We went to visit early and participated in Morning Yoga, here ourselves! Yoga classes start again in September and occur every Saturday at 8am. You can usually find a coffee or food truck outside too.
